Religious Places of Telangana

According to legend, Telangana is said to derive its name from “Trilinga” where Shiva descended as Linga from the mountains of Srisailam, Kalsehwaram, and Draksharama.  This part of Telangana also marks the boundary of the newly formed state. The state is adorned with several places of worship the important ones being Mecca Masjid, Bhadrakali Temple, Ramappa Temple, Thousand Pillar Temple, Sri Lakshmi Narashima Temple and Medak Church.

Religious Places in Adilabad

The important religious attractions of the northernmost district of Telangana, Adilabad, have a few important religious tourist places worth a visit.

Jainath Temple

Situated about 21kms from Adilabad, Jainath Temple was built by a Pallava chief. The temple is so named as its architecture resembles that of the Jains. One of the major festivals celebrated in Jainath Temple is Laxmi Narayana Swami Bhramotsavam from Sudda Astami to Bahula Saptami (October-November).

This temple on the banks of River Godavari is the only temple dedicated to the Goddess of Learning in the whole of South India. Children come here during Akshara puja to begin their education with the blessings of Saraswati. Other than Vasant Panchami, the festivals celebrated here are Vyaas Purnima, Diwali and Dusshera.

Karimnagar

The district which was ruled by the Stavahanas and the Kakatiyas, has important tourist attractions which should not be missed.


Religious Places in Telangana

The architecture of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple resembles that of the architectural style of the Kakatiays and Chalukyas.  The deity is inside the cave and the temple itself is an example of architectural brilliance with the four pillars surrounding the cave portraying events of the Puranas.  A temple of Lord Shiva is there on the north of the Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple and an idol of Veerabhadra with four arms on a big rock on the hillock tells the glorious story of architectural history.

Ramappa Temple

This temple which was built by the Kakatiyas is also known as the Vemulawada Rajarajeshawara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated 70kms from Waranagal, the temple is over six feet tall standing high on a star-shaped platform. The visit to Ramappa temple will be an unforgettable one because of its richly carved pillars and chiselled walls.

Bhadrakali Temple

Situated on the banks of Bhadrakali Lake, the Bhadrakali temple was built in the 6th century by Chalukya king Pulakesi II. It is important for the stone image of Goddess Kali.

Thousand Pillar temple

This is probably one the most significant religious monuments of Telanagana dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Surya. The temple which was constructed in 1163 AD by the Kakatiya ruler, King Rudra Deva is also popular becase of the iconic six feet Nandi within the temple compound.

Bhadrachalam Temple

Lord Ram is the presiding deity of Bhadrachalam Temple located on the banks of river Godavari and is also considered as a holy place for the Hindus.

Nalgonda

Nalgonda which played an important role in the Telangana Liberation struggle has important temples located within its district administration.

Yadagiri Gutta

Located in Bhuvanagiri town, this is one of the religious places of Nalgonda district. The temple which is dedicated to Lord Laxmi Narasimha Swami witnesses heavy crowds especially during holidays and weekends.

Mehabubnagar

It is believed that the Kohinoor and the Golconda diamonds came from Mahabubanagar district which is located about 98kms from Hyderabad. The small towns of Mehabubanagar Alampur and Jetprole and Srirangapur are dotted with various temples and temple complexes.

Sri Sri Sri Jogulaamba temple

This is one of the fifth famous 18 Shakthi Peethas is located in Alampur.

Sri Bala Brahmeshwara Swamy and  Umamaheswaram Temple

Both these temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Mallela Theertam

This is a another holy place important for Shiva Lingam at the foot of a waterfall that attracts hundreds of pilgrims every year.

Somashila

This small town in the district of Mehabubanagar has a wonderful temple complex on the banks of the Krishna River. This complex houses 15 temples of Shivalingas.

Nava Brahma Temples

A group of nine temples constructed by the Chalukyas on the banks of River Tungabhaclra has has temples of goddess Kamakshi and Ekamreshwari at the entrance and decorated with intricate carvings and splendid works of various postures of Gods and Goddesses.

Madhava Swamy temple

Located at Kollapur, this temple was built by the Rajas of Jetprole during the 16th century. This unique temple depicts the twenty four aspects of Lord Vishnu and Dasa-Avatars of Vishnu.

Medak

Medak district which has typical Telangana culture is one of the important cities of the Kakatiya dynasty. Apart from temples displaying brilliant Kakatiya architecture, it is home to the world’s second largest after Vatican and Asia’s largest diocese.

Medak Church

Medak Church is the largest Dioscecian church in Asia and an invaluable possession of Telanaga region representing Gothic architecture. The tiles, the stained glass and the impressive acoustics arrangement in the church can leave one spellbound.

Koti Lingeshwara Swamy Temple

Situated at Siddipet about 45 Kms from Medak, Koti Lingeshwara Swamy Temple is an important tourist attraction of Medak.

Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple:

Situated at a distance of 40kms from Hyderabad and 12 kms from Medak, Lord Narasimha Swamy temple is an age old temple visited by hundreds of devotees who want to seek solace and peace. This temple which is also known as Swetagiri or Gargeya Thapovanam is built of the banks of Haridra river. According to beliefs, people who take a dip in the holy waters of River Haridra are rid not only of their sins but also of skin diseases.

Nizamamabad

Formerly known as Indrapuri or Induru, Nizamabad has some interesting religious places which are a must if one plans to visit Telangana.
Sri Laxmi Narshima Swamy:

Located about 9km from Nizamamabd city, Sri Laxmi Narshima Swamy Temple is popular for Astah Muki or eight corner faced Koneru at the top of the hill.

Bada Pahad:

Bada Pahad is considered as a holy place for Muslims as devotees pay homage to Dargah of Syed Sadullah Hussaini. The dargah is located on the hills between Varni and Chandur.

Sarangapur:

If you travel 8kms from Nizamabad city, you will come across a large Hanuman temple at Sranagapur. The foundation of this temple was laid 52 years ago by the Guru of Chatrapati Sivaji, saint Ramadas.

Kanteshwar:

Neela Kanteshwar temple located near Naizamabad is dedicated to Lord Shiva though the temple was built by the Stavahana king Satakarni II for the Jains.

Rangardeddy

Rangareddy is a true amalgamation of various religions and cultures which is evident from the different architectural marvels.

Chilkur:

One of the ancient temples of Lord Balaji, Chilkur is located on the banks of Himayath Sagar attracting hundreds of devotees every day.

Sanghi Temple

The temple complex at Sanghi built by the Sanghi family is located about 26kms from Hyderabad. The temple complex made of marble has temples Lord Ganesha, Lord Venkateshwara, Lord Hanuman, Lord Kartikeya, Lord Rama, Goddess Durga and Goddess Ashtalakshmi.

Keesaragutta:

This unique hillock where Lord Rama worshipped Shiva is adorned with thousand gods. It also has a sand sculpture in the sanctum sanctorum.

Hyderabad

Currently, the capital of both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Hyderabad is known for its iconic landmark the Mecca Masjid among other places of tourist interest.

Mecca Masjid

One of the oldest mosques of Hyderabad, Mecca Masjid is a historic landmark of the city of Hyderabad. Since bricks were brought from Mecca under the orders of Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, the mosque received its name as Mecca Masjid. It is a listed heritage monument and can accommodate about 10,000 devotees at a time.
