Beechupally Anjaneya Swamy Temple, Mahabubnagar Telangana

Beechupally is home to a famous shrine of god Hanuman (Anjaneya Swamy). The shrine is located on the banks of river Krishna approximately 30 kilometers downstream of Jurala Hydro Electric Project in Mahabubnagar district of Telangana.

The shrine development is boosted by the fact that national highway (NH7) passes through the village. A road bridge constructed here in 1950s helped in booming trade between Telangana and Rayalaseema regions and is considered one of the first and vital connections between south India and central/north India. The shrine consists of a Hanuman temple located 200 meters away from the river while there is a Shiva lingam near the river. During peak monsoon, the raging waters touch the Shiva lingam temple. Here a Lord Rama temple was constructed in 1992. The shrine also has several ghats for the purpose of pushkara snanam, which falls once in every 12 years. The Beechupally shrine is located near two islands on the Krishna River and the larger island is called Gurram Gadda village while the small island is called Nizam Konda. The temple is popular among devotees who believe that their wishes are fulfilled upon worshipping Anjaneya Swamy here at Beechupally. The temple is located 200 yards away from the road.

History of Temple
During Fifteenth centaury the Rajaguru of Sri Krishna Devaraya of Vijayanagar dynasty ‘Sri Vyasaraja’ happens to pass through this holy place. He along with his disciples camped at this place for some time and the Sri Guru felt the holiness of this place. He thought it would be suitable place to install a Sri Hanuman idol at this holy place.

Sri Vyasaraja wanted to transform his thought to practice and then made a beautiful idol of Sri Anjaneya. At the time he was leaving this place he thought about a question in his mind that who should be performing pooja to deity once he left that place. That night in his dream Lord Sri Anjaneya appeared and gave him the solution for this. The Deity of Lord Sri Anjaneya was installed by Sri Vyasaraja on an auspicious day. The next morning by the time he wakes up from sleep he saw a young tribal boy offering prayers to Lord Anjaneya installed by him. That young tribal boy name is ‘Beechupally’. Vyasaraja nominated that small young boy of Boya Tribe as archaka for this temple. From then onwards he became Archaka for that temple. Even today the people belonging to this tribe are nominated as archakas for this Anjaneyaswamy Temple. Lord here is called as ‘Beechupally Rayudu’.

Other Shrines near the Beechupally Temple
Hanuman Temple is about 200 meters away from the river and there is a Shiva Temple near the river. During the rainy season, the water flow becomes high enough to touch the Shivalingam in this temple. A Temple for Lord Rama was also built in this area in 1992. For the convenience of devotees, several ghats were built for Pushkara snanam, a sacred bath that takes place every 12 years. Since then its development continued to expand. In 2004 Pushkaras, the shrine was developed with greater facilities making it one of the major places for Pushkara snanam.

Why the place is named Beechupally
Lord Anjaneya had ordained Sri Vyasaraja that the first person who offers prayer next day of installation should to nominated as archaka of the deity here. As instructed by Lord Anjaneya, Sri Vyasaraja nominated the young boy named ‘Beechupally’ belonging to ‘Boya’ tribe as Archaka of the Lord Anjaneya from then on. From then onwards he became the Archaka and till today persons belonging to Boya Tribe are the archakas of the temple. The village itself was named ’Beechupally’ after the first Boya tribe Archaka, and the Lord as 'Beechupally rayudu'.

It is said that these temples were built by the Badami Chalukya rulers, who were great patrons of art and architecture.  The temple is well known for its architectural heritage of the country.  This temple’s architecture resembles both the northern and western Indian styles .
The Navabrahma temples are present on the left banks of the Tungabhadra river, enclosed in a courtyard. The Nava Brahma temples are Taraka Brahma, Swarga Brahma, Padma Brahma, Bala Brahma, Garuda Brahma, and Arka Brahma, Kumara Brahma, Veera Brahma and Viswa Brahma.

1.Swarga Brahma
It is mentioned in an inscription which is above the Dwarapalaka image, that Swarga Brahma temple was built during 681-696 AD,  by Lokaditya Ela Arasa in honour of the queen of Vinayaditya.  This is the best example of the Badami Chalukya architecture and sculpture. This temple is the most elaborately ornamented temple.  Its  imposing tower (Rekhanagara vimana) is the finest,  compared to other temples at Alampur.
2.Padma Brahma
Padma Brahma temple has a polished stone sculpture of Shivalinga .
3.Bala Brahma
There is a huge Nandi and two set of padams (holy feet),  which are supposed to be those  of Lord Shiva and Sakthi.
4.Vishwa Brahma
5.Garuda Brahma
6.Kumara Brahma
7.Arka Brahma
8.Vira Brahma
The water poured on Shiva Linga  for  abisheka does not flow out anywhere.

As per mythology, this is one of the Sakthi peetam, where “oordhava danta pankthi” (upper jaw with tooth) of Sati Devi fell here in this place.

In the year 1930 the temple was demolished by Muslim invaders. The main idol and consorts were damaged by them. Disfigured idols of Jogulamba and other deities were, protected and repaired by devotees who placed them in Bala Brahma temple.

Goddess Jogulamba is seen in sitting posture.  She is also known as Gruha Chandi. When aarthy is performed, one can see bat, lizard, scorpion and skull adorned in her hair.

As per legand, Maharishi Jamadagni lived with his wife Renuka Devi and his sons worshiping Bala Brahma Swamy.  Mother Renuka  used to make a pot of mud daily and used to fetch water for pooja purpose. One day she saw  Gandravas bathing in river with their wives. She was disturbed by them and was not able to make a pot on that day, and hence she returned home empty handed.  When sage Jamadagni came to know about what had happened, he angrily asked his son to remove her head.  His sons were not ready to do the act and he cursed them. Parasurama his youngest son agreed to do and he cut the head of his mother. The sage was pleased with his son and offered him a boon. He prayed to his father to give life to his brothers and mother, as the boon. Life was given to them accordingly.

Legend says that head of mother Renuka became Ekaveera Devi,  symbol of Maya Roopa and the headless body became Bhoodevi symbol of Mathru roopam.

Jogulamba Temple

Old temple of Jogulamba was destroyed by Bahamani sultans in the 14th century. The idols of Jogulamba and her two shaktis Chandi, Mundi were protected from them and placed in Bala brahmeswara swamy temple untill 2005. Now, a new temple was constructed in the same place and the godess was shifted in to it. New temple of Jogulamba is very much beautiful to see with a nice granite flooring. It is surrounded by a water pool. Villagers of Alampur tell an interesting reason for it: Jogulamba is an Ugra rupa (highly energetic and hard to worship) and this water pool makes the atmosphere cool so that we can easily worship her”.

Idol of Jogulamba is typical. She is in sitting position. She has huge amount of hair with lizard, scorpion, owl and a human scull in it. Idols of Saptamatrikas, Vighneswara and Veenapani veerabhadra are also present in the temple. Original Chandi Mundi idols were left in Bala brahmeswara swamy temple and new idols are made and placed in Jogulamba temple.

The original Jogulamba Temple and Taraka Brahma Temple were completely demolished by Bahamani Sultan army towards the end of 14th century. Vijayanaraga king Harihara Raya sent his army to stop the plunder of Bahamani Sultan's army and fortified the temple complex to stop further attacks on the temple.

The temples at Alampur could not be preserved pretty well, primarily due to the encroachments, lack of space and religious activity of Jogulamba and Balabrahma temples.

It takes about 3-4 hours to visit all the places in Alampur.
